Australian Society and Politics, Economic Policies, Recent Media Interview | 27th June 2025

Saul’s interview with ‘The Wire’ about what I’ve called ‘The Worst Public Policy Decision of the 21st Century Thus Far” – the corruption, at the behest of Australia’s richest state (Western Australia) of the principles which have governed the distribution of financial assistance from the Australian Federal Government to the states and territories since the mid-1930s (including, since its introduction in 2000, the revenue from Australia’s goods and services tax, GST), which is now estimated to cost the Federal Government almost $60 billion over the eleven years to 2029-30 (a massive blow-out from the $9 billion over eight years when initially legislated by the former Coalition Government, with the support of the then Labor Opposition) in 2018. Saul also canvasses a possible way out of this quagmire.
