Saul Eslake’s presentation to the Victorian Commercial Teachers’ Association “CommView 2025” conference in Melbourne on 25th November 2025. In addition to discussing various aspects of the Australian economy in 2025-26 it also looks at:
- the very different implications for Australia, compared with other ‘advanced’ economies, of the rapid growth and industrialization of China over the past three decades;
- comparisons between Australia and its ‘peer group’ (the US, the UK, Canada and New Zealand) with regard to interest rates, inflation, economic growth, unemployment and productivity growth over the past four years;
- factors affecting the so-called “neutral” interest rate;
- capacity constraints on the Australian economy, including in particular sluggish productivity growth; and
- fiscal policy challenges over the remainder of the 2020s
